The effect of an autistic narrator

The main character is Christopher John Francis Boone who is an autistic fifteen-year-old boy. He hates physychal contact and he doesn’t like to talk with strangers. Christopher is very clever, he is very interested in mathemathics, and he has a photographic memory. However, he has difficulty understanding human behaviour, gestures and relationships. He is also unable to recognize and comprehend facial expressions other than ”happy” and ”sad” and he has difficulty understanding methaphors and jokes. He can’t put himself in somebody’s place, and he can’t imagine how people might feel or think in certain situations. He also hates lies, and he himself can’t tell lies, except from white ones. To protect himself against overwhelming noise or information, he curls up and groans.
For Christopher, the desire for order and stability is a necessity of living. As he suffers from Asberger’s Syndrome, he needs an orderly and stable life to be happy and safe. For instance, he can’t stand it when furniture is being moved around.
Christopher’s mood is decided by how many red or yellow cars he sees in a row.

The fact that Christopher suffers from Asberger’s Syndrome makes the novel very different from other murder novels. He sees the world in a very special way. He focuses on irrelevant details and when he gets a bit out of track, he can carry on talking about the same thing for a very long time, even though it isn’t very relevant. The novel shows that Christopher is very intelligent because it contains a lot of mathemathical problems and how to solve them.

Even though I like that this novel is different because of the way it is written, I sometimes thought that it was a bit heavy to read because of the fact that Cristopher gets caught up in a lot of things that really doesn’t interest me. But in many ways it is very exciting, because we learn a lot about how an autistic person looks at different situations and how their life can be a struggle some times. The language of this novel is, due to its narrator, quite simple. It contains many illustrations, and it is written in a naive and humourous way.

CHERYL COLE

Cheryl Cole is a British singer who has become the nation’s sweetheart after joining X Factor in 2008 as a judge. She is also a singer, and former member of the group Girls Aloud. As a solo artist and as a member of the group she has had more than 20 top 10 singles in Great Britain. She has also been married to Ashley Cole who plays football in Chelsea and England. As a child, she won a lot of talent and beauty contests. Cheryl was born on the 30^th of June 1983 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Cheryl and Ashley got officially separated on the 26^th of February 2010. In July the same year, she got the dangerous illness malaria. The doctor told her that she could die, but after a month she got rid of of the illness. Media claim that she has a relationship with the dancer Derek Hough, but none of them has said something about it.

From 2005 to 2010 she has been nominated for BRIT Award five times. She has been a recognized and photographed style icon, and she is referred to as a fashionista by the press. She has been on the covers of British Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar. Additionally, she has become the new face of the cosmetic company L’Oréal. 

CRASH

I've seen the movie Crash before, but i think the movie was much better this time. I think it is a good movie, and it is about a really important issue; racism. I especially liked the scene where the girl jumped on her father to protect him against the gun - it was quite touching. I also liked the structure of the film. It starts with the end, and then it goes back one day so we can see what has happened earlier. In the movie, we get to follow several persons who all have different stories. ..........................

20th of April 2010

My last day in Scotland, but since my plane didn’t live until 5 p.m., I decided to go a bit earlier to Edinburgh, so finally I would have the chance to be one of the one million persons every year who visit Edinburgh Castle. There were, as expected, a lot of tourists. I went to the top of the Castle Rock, where I got this panoramic view over the city. Edinburgh Castle is situated in Princes Street, which is a street that contains a mix of both great shopping and sightseeing experiences. 

After some hours with walking in the streets, I decided to have a coffee and a snack at Starbucks. The Starbucks I went to was actually situated in a book shop, if I could say so. This is quite clever, because people can come to the three floor big book shop, and when they come to the top floor, they probably will be so exhausted that they just have to sit down and drink or eat something from the well known Starbucks, which you can find in a lot of countries. Additionally, this is good for the book shop too. Because when people are going to Starbucks, they have to go through the whole book shop. Then they perhaps will see one or two books that they find interesting, and maybe they will read it while they are eating or drinking something at Starbucks. Afterwards, they will maybe buy it when they are leaving.

After I had been at Starbucks for some time, it was time for me to turn my head back home. 

When I was sitting on the plane, I watched James Bond, Goldfinger, to be completely accurate, on my ipod, and that reminded me that the actor who played James Bond in that film, Sean Connery, originally comes from Scotland.

At the moment I’m lying in my bed, ready to get some sleep. This has been an unforgettable holiday with tons of experiences. However, I’m glad to be back home and I’m looking forward to finally get some rest.

18th of April 2010

Today I went to a big castle just outside Edinburgh, named Dalhousie Castle. I spent some time in the castle’s spa and had a facial. For the first time, I realized how different the English and the Scottish languages are. Who would know that Scottish could be that difficult to understand? To tell you the truth, it became easier and easier every minute. It is a habit.

When I was leaving the castle, I saw all these dressed up people, and then I realized that there was going to be a wedding there. Suddenly, I heard a low music coming from the room beside me. One of the staff at the hotel saw how curious I got, so he told me that I could enter the room. When I got in, a man was standing there in his kilt, playing a bag pipe, of course. So I took up my camera to film it. After all, this was something I don’t see every day. This experience made me wonder if the myth about Scottish men not wearing underwear under their kilt is true. It is kind of funny.

19th of April 2010 

Today I decided to go and see one of the things that I associate the most with Scotland, namely Loch Ness. I have heard that the Loch Ness is one of the most celebrated holiday destinations in the UK.  Measured in surface area it is considered as Scotland’s second biggest lake, and the biggest one measured in water mass. However, the lake is basically famous for the “Nessie,” which is an alleged monster that apparently lives in the lake. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any signs of Nessie.

On my way home, I decided to pop over the border to England to make a small trip to Alnwick Castle, which is called Hagwarts in several Harry Potter films. That was quite interesting, since I was a huge Harry Potter fan when I was younger. The castle is actually the second largest inhabited castle in England. It has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. It was also one of the first homes in the North East to have electricity.

Unfortunately, the castle’s area was closed, so I had to watch it from quite far away. But since it was closed, I spent some time in a beautiful garden right next to the “Harry Potter-Castle”. In the garden there were flowers, huge trees and fountains. It was simply a fantastic experience.

17th of April 2010

Today I arrived in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Scotland has its own flag, it is blue with a white cross, although of course it is a part of the United Kingdom. My flight only took about three hours. The fact that the trip was so short was great, because my plane arrived at 10 o’clock in the morning. That gave me the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the day, without being too exhausted. 

Afterwards, when I came to Rita’s house, which in fact is in a small village called Dunns, we decided to have lunch at a café, and then we went for a walk, so she could show me her nice home village and what it has to offer.

Even though I have only been here in Scotland for less than a day, I have seen a lot of different animals already. Both hares, cats, eagles and hedgehogs, and even a pheasant. The flora and fauna here is beautiful. After all, Scotland is a country with a rich nature and wildlife, and it has mountains too. It is also surrounded by many isles, among others the Shetland isles. Scotland is a cold and moist country, but since it is situated so far to the north, the days are still quite long and bright in summer. I would say that the climate here is a lot like in Norway.

When we got back to Rita’s house, she started preparing the Scottish national dish, Haggis. Haggis is made from the sheep’s pluck minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal's stomach for approximately three hours. I won’t say that it tasted too good, although I’m glad that I now can tell my friends that I have tasted haggis.

But now I have to get some sleep, because tomorrow is going to be an exciting day. 

HOMEWORK

The analysis of the text ”Butterflies” is a good analysis because it is structured, it contains a short summary (plot, setting) , interpretation, a description of what the conflict is, some information about the characters, the point of view, and finally, the analyst’s personal opinion. As I see it, this analysis contains all the important elements of a good analysis. When I first read the text “Butterflies” I didn’t really understand it, but after I had read the analysis, everything about the text became clear.

From this analysis I can learn how a good analysis should be, and that I probably would have to read some texts several times before I understand the whole meaning of it.

My favourite TV series
When I want to chill out, I like to watch TV. There are many different TV series that I like to watch. For instance: One Tree hill, Hotel Cæsar and Desperate Housewives. In addition to those series, I like to watch reality shows, namely X-factor, Farmen, Paradise Hotel etc.
Paradise Hotel is quite ridiculous, however, I have to watch it, due to the fact that it is fun to watch people making fools out of themselves.

English language in my every-day life

Whether we are aware of it or not, the English language affects us a lot. At least it affects me a lot. Every day I listen to music with English lyrics, I watch TV series where they speak English and often I read English texts too. I’m often using English words and expressions in my colloquial. This is partially because of the fact that the Norwegian language has borrowed several words from the English language and partially because English words make my language a bit more resilient. Additionally, when I am chatting with somebody on for instance Facebook, I use a lot of English abbreviations, such as BRB (be right back), OMG (Oh my God) etc.

A little bit about me

My name is Karoline Liseth Torres and I am 16 years old. I was born on the 12^th of February 1994, the same day as the opening ceremony of The Olympic Games at Lillehammer. I’m a student at Thora Storm, section Adolf Øien. In my spare time I like to play football and spend time with my friends. My football team is called Nardo, and I have been a member of Nardo Football club since I was 7 years old.

My family includes my mum, my father, my younger brother Mathias and my cat Melis.
